Oral Thrush (Candida Infection) is an infection caused by the overgrowth of the Candida fungus in the mouth. Candida is a type of yeast that naturally lives in the mouth, but when there is an imbalance in the body, it can overgrow and cause uncomfortable symptoms.

Causes of Oral Thrush:

  1. Imbalance of Oral Bacteria: When the microbial balance in the mouth is disturbed, Candida can overgrow.
  2. Long-Term Use of Antibiotics: Antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria in the mouth, creating an environment where Candida can thrive.
  3. Weakened Immune System: Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or those on immunosuppressive medications, are at higher risk of developing oral thrush.
  4. Poor Hygiene of Dentures: Dentures can harbor bacteria and fungi, especially if not cleaned properly.
  5. Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: Both habits can increase the risk of oral thrush.

Symptoms:

  • White patches or sores in the mouth, particularly on the tongue, gums, and roof of the mouth.
  • Pain or a burning sensation in the mouth.
  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of something stuck while eating.
  • Bad breath.

Treatment:

  1. Use of Antifungal Medication: A doctor may prescribe antifungal drugs, either in pill form or as a topical gel, to treat the infection.
  2. Proper Oral Hygiene: Brushing teeth regularly and using dental floss can help prevent fungal overgrowth.
  3. Keep the Mouth Dry: Avoid keeping the mouth wet for prolonged periods, as a moist environment can encourage fungal growth.
  4. Healthy Diet: Limit sugary and yeast-containing foods, as they can promote Candida growth.
  5. Consult a Doctor: If you experience symptoms of oral thrush, it is important to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Note:

Oral thrush can be easily treated if detected early, but if left untreated, it can lead to more serious oral health issues.
